Background of the Study
In the digital age, universities are increasingly relying on online platforms for educational and administrative functions, making network security an urgent concern. Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, like many educational institutions, faces cybersecurity challenges including unauthorized access, data breaches, and cyberattacks on critical academic and administrative systems. Network security protocols are essential to safeguarding these resources. Protocols such as SSL/TLS, IPSec, WPA3, and various forms of encryption play key roles in protecting data integrity and confidentiality during transmission (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).
Each protocol offers different strengths, depending on its implementation and the specific needs of the network environment. For example, SSL/TLS is frequently used for secure web communication, while IPSec is often applied to protect data in virtual private networks (VPNs). In the context of Federal University, Gashua, selecting and deploying the appropriate security protocols for campus networks is vital for preventing external and internal threats. The study will conduct a comparative analysis of these protocols in the university’s network, assessing their effectiveness, ease of implementation, and impact on performance.
Given the increasing complexity of cyber threats, this research aims to provide insights into the most effective security protocols for higher education institutions.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the adoption of network security protocols at Federal University, Gashua, there are concerns about the effectiveness of these protocols in securing sensitive university data and services. The current protocols may not be adequately addressing evolving cyber threats, and there is limited understanding of which protocols are most suitable for the university's unique needs.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of different network security protocols implemented at Federal University, Gashua.
To compare the strengths and weaknesses of various security protocols used in the university network.
To recommend the most suitable network security protocols for ensuring robust data protection at Federal University, Gashua.
Research Questions
What network security protocols are currently implemented at Federal University, Gashua?
How do these protocols compare in terms of security effectiveness, performance, and implementation challenges?
Which network security protocol is most suitable for protecting sensitive university data and services?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the network security protocols currently deployed in the campus network of Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State. It will assess protocols like SSL/TLS, IPSec, and WPA3. The limitations of the study include the dynamic nature of security threats, making it challenging to predict all potential risks, and limited resources for testing all security protocols under real-world conditions.
Definitions of Terms
Network Security Protocols: Standardized methods used to secure network communications and prevent unauthorized access.
SSL/TLS: Protocols used for securing communication over a computer network, primarily the internet.
IPSec: A framework of open standards for ensuring private and secure communications over IP networks.
WPA3: A security protocol for wireless networks, improving protection against brute-force attacks.
